UPDATE: We’ve been politely asked by the studio to remove the concept artwork from this post since it wasn’t approved for the press. But you can still check out some of Ian’s awesome work at his site: http://www.ianjoyner.com/
If you, like the Geeks, were disappointed in the generic nature of the Muttations in the movie version of The Hunger Games, you may be even more let down to know that there is concept art showing them with the features of the fallen tributes like the book had them. Granted, Katniss noticed the eyes were those of the dead kids, but basing the faces and sizes of the Mutts on them as well makes for a more creepy effect. Especially nasty is the Glimmer Mutt, face still swollen from the tracker jacker attack.
Concept artist Ian Joyner says:
Tasked with designing the ‘muttations’, the idea was that these creatures were the fallen children brought back as horrible mockeries of themselves, forcing the survivors to deal with old friends and foes in a whole new way.
Here is just a small sample of the work I did on the film, from the very first pitch to the ‘final’ design. Sadly, it appears they’ve changed the designs pretty drastically later in film production.
